Christiane Schwartz, President Media and Networks Competitive Cluster
Christiane Schwartz graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from the Ecole Supereure d’Electricité in France. In 1973 she obtained her Docorate degree in Quantum Optics. Christiane Schwartz joined France Telecom in 1969, at the CNET (France Telecom R&D Division) in the non linear optical department, she later joined the CCETT (Center for Research in Telediffusion and Telecommunications) where she participated in work on the "Videotex" and the "Teletex", precursors to today’s mobile teletexte services that she also contributed to. She contributed to the development and launch of the French Minitel system, the first online computer network before the internet. From 1981, Christiane Schwartz directed within the Direction General of Telecommunications (DGT) in France, the development of the message/catalogue/multimedia sector. In 1990, Christiane Schwartz took on responsibility in the CCETT, and became Director in 1995. In 1999, she created the Department of Innovation and led Corporate Projects for France Telecom’s worldwide activities. In this role, she elaborated the innovation strategy of the France Telecom group. In July 2004, she was appointed Special Advisor to the Executive Director of the R&D division of France Telecom. Christiane Schwartz is member of the Advisory Committee in the field of ICT (CCSTIC) for the French Ministry of Research. In 2005 she took on the role as President of the Media and Networks Competitive Cluster. In this role, she works to bring together actors from higher education and academic research institutions, SMI/SMEs and large companies from Bretagne, who are leaders in the media and networks fields to elaborate and bring to term innovative research projects.
She is also on the board of directors for France Telecom’s Capital Risk Subsidiary, the board of directors for the INRIA research institute and the board of the Foundation for the New Internet Generation (FING). She is member of the Expert Panel for the European Commission’s e-Europe program.
